There is no I in Team, but there is a ME. – – Mitch Saba

It is important to be part of a team but it is more important to maintain your individuality.  Even in groups we must be willing to stand up for what is right and just.  While team sports and events are important and fun always remember that a great team is made up of individuals working together.

Made it….

It is Friday 🙂 Nothing else matters today, I made it. But there was this one thing…
I got a fortune the other day….To understand is hard. Once one understands, action is easy.…Now usually I like my fortunes or at least find them amusingly useful, however this one annoys me. I’m not buying it. Perhaps it is because I just finished filing my Taxes. Perhaps it is because understanding does not equate to action, especially easy action. Acceptance or surrender I might buy but not understanding. I can understand something needs to be but if it is unpleasant that understanding will not necessarily push me to action! So who ever wrote this fortune…you are no Confucius or Lao Tzu. Perhaps the writer’s problem is that understanding often comes through action…when we mess up!

Live

Thoughts of lost friends and passing time is always a sobering exercise.

Are you Mr. or Mrs. Deeds?

operibus anteire
leading the way with deeds” To speak with actions instead of words. This seems to occur less and less these days. Every day I interact with many different people in diverse situations. People seem afraid to act or to self-absorbed I am not sure there is a difference. It amazes me how many people have no beliefs. What do beliefs have to do with taking action? EVERYTHING! We act based on what we believe. If you believe you will get in trouble you are less likely to act. I admire those that lead through action, even if I don’t always agree with them. Unfortunately there are few I admire. A woman I know recently gained my admiration. She stood up for herself when it was less then comfortable to do so. She was physically harassed. At first she did nothing because I believe she was in shock…not uncommon… But after a few days she confronted the aggressor, told him how his actions made her felt and…this was her mistake…thought he would apologize! She expected the apology because she could not comprehend someone reacting any other way when confronted with some trespass they may not had been aware of…mistake two. She did not get the apology however she no longer has any problems from this person. I believe she feels better about herself too. Action! Yes this is a minor form of action, but it is better then crawling off into a corner to sulk and whine to those who’ll listen. Keep your thoughts to yourself and act! You might be surprised to see who will follow you…but don’t be surprised to find yourself standing alone either! If you act selflessly not for the attention of others you will triumph regardless of the outcome…at least that is what I believe!!

Some People Never Listen…

Unfit

Why is it that some people just never listen? Especially to people they already know? Many people will believe the first stranger they meet and hold to what they say like it is the Gospel! I wonder if they have such a low opinion of themselves that they think no one who they know can possibly know anything…or do they just think you are an idiot?! Regardless you should identify these people and just keep quiet when they ask your opinion, after all they are going to disregard whatever you say so save your breath. 🙂

Your Honor

I prefer the “u” in honour as it seems to be missing these days.

Right now a moment of time is passing by!…We must become that moment.
– – Paul Cezanne

This reminds me of something I say all the time. We only have the present, spending to much time dwelling on the past or future only wastes the present, so live! This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t learn from our past or plan for our future, we should. But we shouldn’t live in the past or dream about the future so much that we miss the present. So stop thinking about exercising, get off your butt and get to work!! Of course after you finish reading this blog! 😉

I know what I have given you. I do not know what you have received.
– – Antonio Porchia

This reminds me of many of my students over the years. It reminds me of perspective, theirs and mine. As an instructor it is very important to be aware of the perspective of our students. They perceive our lessons with their life experiences, this can give different meaning to how your lessons are understood or how they might use them. Remember people come from all walks of life and have all kinds of experiences. So before you get frustrated with your students look at your lesson or technique from their perspective, it just might help.

Happy New Year 2007! A friend of mine sent me this note and I thought it worth sharing…
May this year bring you great prosperity, and see the fulfillment of your dreams.
Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.

I beg you, everyone:
Life and death is grave matter.
All things pass away quickly.
Each of you must be completely alert:
never neglectful, never indulgent.
Evening Message in the Zendo
