Ah, the young are so naive in their sense of superiority and invincibility. To bad they don’t have a sense of their stupidity, well if they did then we would not get amusing stories like this one…

Here is a story that will make you feel safe…unfortunately it is an all to common event.
In ENFIELD, CT (as reported here)

Two female officers were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after responding to a reported domestic violence incident, police said.

One officer was struck repeatedly in the face and the other’s arm was injured while she was trying to protect herself, police said. Both were taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

The two officers were at a house on Garden Drive around 5 p.m. when the altercation began, police said.

One person, a 15-year-old male, has been arrested. His charges have not been released because of his age.

There is very little discussion about cases like these because the violate the politically correct environment society wants.  In the comments on this article someone mentioned that there was no mention of the size of the 15 years old assailant, his size shouldn’t matter.  Police Officers are well equip and even if they are not should be sufficiently proficient at defending and subduing someone, especially two to one!  Any Martial Artist or self-defense instructor can show multiple ways for any situation to over power bigger, stronger opponents.   Of course experience counts for a lot, you can practice a technique all your life but until you try it in a live or realistic simulated environment it is untested.  The biggest problem with the above story is it demonstrates that the officers lost control of the situation, a luxury no Police Officer can afford.

Another commenter stated “Police Officers DO NOT receive hand-to-hand combat training.  They have not for almost 25 years, since a female officer was injured in training and sued over her injuries (and won).  I love what the public is willing to believe about those elected or hired to protect them, based on common sense yes, facts…no.“  Most people will not believe that first statement it is true, (which proves the third sentence), at least in Connecticut.  Some Officers seek their own training however while they should it is no replacement for training common to all Officers, where they can test and challenge each other.

Perhaps the next time you think about your safety you’ll remember this story and realize you are on your own more then you realize.  Perhaps it is time to get back to that Karate Class and hone your skills!?

Why can we never be wrong?

As most of you know I am huge critic of law enforcement because of my behind the scenes knowledge.  While there are ample cases of abuse of power or lack of training on the part of the Police.  The following story on CNN has none of these attributes: The ‘unfathomable’ arrest of a black scholar. The following are just a few of my comments regarding the journalistic neglegence that in my opinion was employed in the writing of this “news” article.

“When I’m opening the door of my own house, someone will ask me where the man of the house is, implying that I’m staff,” said Kodjoe, best known for starring in Showtime’s “Soul Food.” When the UPS man or woman comes to my home they ask me the same question…I wonder if they think I am an African American?!  It is also interesting to me that the AM community cling to and promote terms like “Soul Food” while they scream racial profiling to anyone who notices they are African Americans or acting in an inappropriate way.  Remember the Police are supposed to investigate suspicious activity.  Perhaps to avoid this problem in the future Mr Gates could post a prominent sign stating that an ‘African American lives here’ then if the Police see an African American climbing in a window or breaking down the door they can just assume it is the owner.

My other favorite quote was:  “She said there’s a reason why you don’t hear about prominent white people arrested in their homes: “because it doesn’t happen.”" Really?  Or is it because hearing of a White person getting arrested for disorderly conduct isn’t news any more than it should be when an African American gets arrested for disorderly conduct.

But the most inflammatory statement in the article that really nails the white conspiracy theory to the wall is this quote: “a police officer responded to a call about a potential break-in at his home that was phoned in by a white woman.”.  They needed to state this to demonstrate that all white people think all blacks, (sorry) African Americans are criminals and of course all white women are frightened by African American men!

The article devolves from there with much anguish to the point of tears at the arrest of a member of society so upstanding he obviously thinks he stands above the rest of us.

That leads me to the title of this peice.  Why can we never be wrong?  We can never improve ourselves if we always feel we are in the right.  Perhaps Mr. Gates should add that to his pending Documentary.

Yet another sad event…

Once again there is a report of abuse by a Martial Arts Instructor. Charges have been filed against 54 year old, Keith Ingraham, of Newmarket, NH (USA) for sexually assaulting one of his 15 year old female students. Let us hope the Judicial System will punish him to the full extent of the law. These cases disgust me but is important to mention them to insure awareness is kept high. Parents, watch your children. Kids, NO ONE has the right to touch you this should be one of your first lessons as a Martial Art student. If anything like this does happen seek help immediately.

Officer accused of murder, molestation

Once again the children suffer. It is unfortunate that parents are not more aware of the dangers to their children. My Father always use to say ‘you don’t know what goes on in other people’s homes after they close the doors’. He was right. Inline with his beliefs my Father never let us sleep over someone else’s house. Matter of fact it wasn’t until we were teenagers that we could go to someone else’s home without one of my parents present! Many of you reading this can close you gaping jaws now! My parents were not ogres, they were caring individuals who felt their job as parents was to protect us (not shelter us) from the world, they preserved our innocence.

So what does this have to do with anything. Well there is another story of a child, in this case an 11 year old girl, being molested by a ‘pillar of the community’. In this case the molester was a cop. The mother admits that she was suspicious of the mans interest in her daughter because he showed NO interest in her (the mother). The should of been a BIG ALERT but instead the mother ignored her maternal instincts and allowed the man access to her daughter. I know it sounds like I am vilifying the mother here, and to some extent I am. She is guilty of putting her daughter in harms way. I am sure there are a million excuses for her actions but that doesn’t change the fact that her daughter has at the young age of 11 lost her innocents and will probably have difficulty having a normal relationship with or at least trusting men.

Interestingly the girl only told her mother about the abuse after her school showed a video on inappropriate touching. The school had to educate this girl!! Again, what was the mother doing? I am not suggesting that parents should have graphic discussions with their children about appropriate or inappropriate behavior between a man and a woman. I am suggesting that parents should talk to the children in an appropriate manner given the age of the child. This discussion should grow as your child grows. In those rare occasions when you have no choice to surrender your children to others make sure they are people you know well. And even then once your children are home with you ask them (surreptitiously) about the details of their time away from you. Watch for behavioral changes. Take your blinders off and see what is really going on, not just what you want to see through your trusting rose-colored glasses.

How is this related to Karate?! Well this story began in a Karate Class where the girl was taking classes. But please don’t take my word for it, read the article yourself.

Please remember people often have ulterior motives for their actions. Any adult (especially a man) that wants to spend extensive ‘private’ time with young children should be severely examined. As an adult we need to be aware of the appearance of our behavior regardless of how honorable our intentions. Remember the cop in the story went on to kill his wife before fleeing. That could have just as easily been the 11 year old girl.
