Life and other distractions!

Yes, it has been a while since I posted regularly.  With 977 posts, life has caught up with me, I’m spread to thin and starting to focus in different areas.  One of the reasons I haven’t posted recently; I am in the process of writing a book.  I am very excited about it and it is coming along nicely.  I’m hoping to be done before Thanksgiving, perhaps I can make the Christmas rush!

Another is I have started teaching at a new facility and getting it ramped up and breaking even requires my dedication and support.  After all that is what this is all about, actual physical martial arts training!

You will see more posts from me in the future, especially on training, stay tuned, and thanks for reading.

Cyber Sparring

Well it has been an interesting week… Last week a Russian hacker was able to find some vulnerable code on our site and insert some malware.  I am not proud of this fact but honesty is the best policy.  Regardless I spent a good portion of the past week trying to isolate and extract the hacker’s code from the site.  My efforts were intermittently though always temporary success.  I was reminded of my younger days sparring some of the older and more experienced students, just when I would find their weakness, a way around their defenses…they would correct their error and shut down my successful attack.  I wish my cyber struggle was as easy as they made it seem.  I wish I could get the hacker in the sparring ring for three minutes!  Well there are always lessons to learn and I will walk away from this experience a wiser man.

I had been planning on overhauling the site, cleaning out old functions and modernizing everything, well as they say there is no time like the present! (except when it is your busiest time of the year…)  I have preserved all of my content and learned a new appreciation for my backups.  Like training to stay sharp managing a cyber world requires diligence and practice.

Hope everyone likes the new look, feel and functionality of the site.  As always, drop me a note with your comments and suggestions.

Trouble in Paradise

Over the last week there have been some bad happenings here at KT.  About a week ago our site was compromised and those lovely spammers/hackers/criminals had some fun leaving a few viruses and malware on our site.  We have since cleaned up their mess and locked the door they came in through.  I can tell you it is a lovely way to spend your free time.  So matters were handled and it appeared things were getting back to normal.  Guess again.  It seems Google crawled our site shortly after it was compromised and finding viruses and malware marked our site as “This Site May Harm Your Computer”!  This was discovered today.  Our traffic has all bust come to a stop because of this lovely warning and the fact that Firefox 3 which was released a week ago actually blocks an attempt to visit our site!  It not only blocks your visit it scares the pants off of you!!  It scared me and it’s my site…I was wondering if I should trust myself…

Now I am not saying that some of these measures are not good things, but I can’t help but feel that my house was broken into and the police showed up and arrested me for burglary!  Now I need to prove that I am in fact innocent.  Not a nice feeling for someone who grew up thinking you were innocent until proven guilty.  I’ve read a lot of reports of people having similar problems and quiet frankly they are mad at Google.  Personally I think what Google is doing is a good idea that is implemented poorly.  Yes the great Google got it wrong.  I think in cases like mine their service is invaluable to alerting you to the fact that you have a problem with your site.  Having dealt with these types of problem I can tell you that finding the problem is often difficult because these criminal types are good at hiding their work.  But perhaps when Google finds a problem like this they could fire off a warning email to the site owner to give them a chance to clean things up (since I doubt they even know they have a problem).  With all of Google’s resources this would not cause them any harm, it’s just a suggestion.

I’ll report back on how easy or not it is to get this scarlet letter removed from my site.  In the mean time I am going to ponder the thought that the Internet is quickly becoming a playground only for the rich and the rich corporations who can employ full time staff to catch these problems before Google does.

And to the Hackers/Spammers/Defacers/Malware-ers I hope to see you in the ring real soon…

A Short Break

Let me apologize to all our loyal readers for my silence this past week, I am dealing with a few personal issues that have me slightly distracted at the moment.  If all goes well I should be back in action this coming week with some very interesting topics and material.  Perhaps I will write more about some of the issues I’m dealing with but right now I didn’t want to leave everyone hanging in the dark.

To Our Readers, Especially Those Who Disagree

It was mentioned recently that moderating blog comments is seen as censorship. It seems some readers wonder if we will accept their comment, or if I will “Censor” them and therefore choose not to comment!Censoring is Bad

To be Clear, CENSORSHIP IS BAD!

If you could see the amount of SPAM/Junk/Trash that attempts to make it into our comments on a given day you would understand why we need to “moderate” our comments. It seems one way spammers make money is to get their stuff post random “comments” to blogs. These “comments,” which spam programs generate by the billions, often turn out to be ads for online drugs, get-rich-quick scams, links to porn sites, and the like. We detest these type of comments!

It is pretty rare that we wrongly classify a comment but if we do it is not intentional. If your comment doesn’t show up on the blog do not assume that we’ve censored it. We reject very, very few for their content. If you send in a comment and it doesn’t appear within 24 hours (and usually much sooner), give us a second chance — send in another one. If you still don’t see results, drop one of us an e-mail.

Hopefully this puts everyone at ease that we only censor SPAM.

Please remember that since we want this to be a family friendly site we have to be vigilant. The good news is once you have posted a few approved comments your posts are immediately displayed. We still check them to make sure some slimy spammer hasn’t tricked his or her way into the system…but that isn’t you!

So by all means post a comment! Agree with me, disagree with me, take me to task, challenge my logic (I know I leave holes some times!), argue with other commentor’s posts, tell me you love me, but don’t spam me! Honestly all comments are welcome because it motivates me and helps me to know what you want to hear…

See you in the comments…
