Great Looking Effort, No Real Accomplishment

Being busy does not always mean real work.
The object of all work is production or
accomplishment and to either of these ends
there must be Forethought, System, Planning,
Intelligence, and Honest Purpose, as well as
Perspiration.  Seeming to do is not doing”

– Thomas Edison

Given the measure of accomplishments Thomas Edison made in his lifetime his words bear listening to, in every arena of your life.  Many of us are simply robots going through the motions of life, busy like bees in a hive, yet what do we accomplish?  We approach everything in this manner.  We workout for 22 minutes because that is what someone told us, no forethought, no real goals.  Take a moment today and think about what you want to accomplish, meaning figure out what your goals are.  Look at how you are going to do this (system and planning).  Make sure your system and plan make sense, not a pie-in-the-sky unintelligent plan but one that is realistic.  Be honest with yourself and your abilities.  It doesn’t take that long to go through these steps!  Now all you need to add is perspiration!

Stand against Tyranny

A study published in the latest issue of the academic journal Applied Economics Letters took on many of the claims made regularly by advocates of stricter gun laws. From the paper Abstract: “The purpose of the present study is to determine the effects of state-level assault weapons bans and concealed weapons laws on state-level murder rates. Using data for the period 1980 to 2009 and controlling for state and year fixed effects, the results of the present study suggest that states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murder rates than other states. It was also found that assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level. These results suggest that restrictive concealed weapons laws may cause an increase in gun-related murders at the state level. The results of this study are consistent with some prior research in this area, most notably Lott and Mustard (1997).

Nothing surprising here to anyone with a ounce of common-sense!  Interesting this is confirming prior research from1997, proves that the facts/proof have been available which begs the question, if we know this and the proof is available why the huge push for gun control and weapons bans? Support of stronger restrictions on gun ownership is not supported by an exhaustive analysis of crime statistics.  The people pushing for these restrictions are not back woods dummies, they are well educated people!  Why would they ignore the facts?  Why hide behind emotional responses and ignore the statistics, studies, and obvious fact that the vast majority of shootings occur in “gun free zones”.  Could it be that there is a hidden agenda?  There don’t seem to be to many other logical reasons for such an agenda.  It is a power grab, plan and simple.  The “powers that be” (UN, US Government, etc) understand that an armed populous is a limitation on their power and ability to push their agenda and control.  History proves this to be true.  The only province in the Soviet Union to successfully revolt ware the province of Georgia, why?  Because their population had the right to carry musket loaders.  This occurred during the mid-1900’s, not during the 1800’s, but the mere musket loader and a willingness to take significant losses enabled their successful and prolonged revolt.  Afghanistan was and is another example of an armed population holding off and defeating a significantly larger and more advanced force (Russia and now US).

If you can check your emotional response for a moment and think about the topic logically I believe you will begin to see the light of common-sense.  Self-Defense is not just a personal issue, it is defense against tyranny in any form, be it personal, gang, vigilant, organized or government.  With no protection your only course of action is to submit or die.  The Martial Arts began in response to such tyranny, and still stand as the appropriate response to defend against physical  acts of tyranny, but even the Martial Arts has its limit and facing a shooter beyond arms length is such a limit.  Stand for Freedom, Stand against Tyranny, Oppose Gun Laws and Restrictions.

This has nothing to do with the Martial Arts, but how often do you get to see what a propane tank explosion looks like?  Consider this a safety message to give you some perspective on the destructive force stored up in that propane tank attached to your grill/house.

Or just watch it because, well, things are exploding…!

Yes, it has been a while since I posted regularly.  With 977 posts, life has caught up with me, I’m spread to thin and starting to focus in different areas.  One of the reasons I haven’t posted recently; I am in the process of writing a book.  I am very excited about it and it is coming along nicely.  I’m hoping to be done before Thanksgiving, perhaps I can make the Christmas rush!

Another is I have started teaching at a new facility and getting it ramped up and breaking even requires my dedication and support.  After all that is what this is all about, actual physical martial arts training!

You will see more posts from me in the future, especially on training, stay tuned, and thanks for reading.

Here is a story that will make you feel safe…unfortunately it is an all to common event.
In ENFIELD, CT (as reported here)

Two female officers were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after responding to a reported domestic violence incident, police said.

One officer was struck repeatedly in the face and the other’s arm was injured while she was trying to protect herself, police said. Both were taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

The two officers were at a house on Garden Drive around 5 p.m. when the altercation began, police said.

One person, a 15-year-old male, has been arrested. His charges have not been released because of his age.

There is very little discussion about cases like these because the violate the politically correct environment society wants.  In the comments on this article someone mentioned that there was no mention of the size of the 15 years old assailant, his size shouldn’t matter.  Police Officers are well equip and even if they are not should be sufficiently proficient at defending and subduing someone, especially two to one!  Any Martial Artist or self-defense instructor can show multiple ways for any situation to over power bigger, stronger opponents.   Of course experience counts for a lot, you can practice a technique all your life but until you try it in a live or realistic simulated environment it is untested.  The biggest problem with the above story is it demonstrates that the officers lost control of the situation, a luxury no Police Officer can afford.

Another commenter stated “Police Officers DO NOT receive hand-to-hand combat training.  They have not for almost 25 years, since a female officer was injured in training and sued over her injuries (and won).  I love what the public is willing to believe about those elected or hired to protect them, based on common sense yes, facts…no.”  Most people will not believe that first statement it is true, (which proves the third sentence), at least in Connecticut.  Some Officers seek their own training however while they should it is no replacement for training common to all Officers, where they can test and challenge each other.

Perhaps the next time you think about your safety you’ll remember this story and realize you are on your own more then you realize.  Perhaps it is time to get back to that Karate Class and hone your skills!?

A New Hero

The following video is off topic but worth sharing for the clear and truthful picture given of our current relations with China and our economic picture.  I have a new hero because of how truthful, honest and unabashed the presentation is.

In this following video clip, Wolf Blitzer is called out for pandering, he isn’t none to happy, no more so then the Wizard was when the curtain was pulled back!  What is surprised me was who did it…The Donald!  No, not Donald Duck, Donald Trump!  I am posting this video because every word that Trump says in this video is pure GOLD.  The man didn’t pull any punches and he does it in a way we should all strive to do, truthfully and honestly without the mean spiritedness or sarcasm that is to often born out of ill motives and/or fear.

Point and match…

No Atheists on School Boards

At least not when a gun is pointing at them!

“He was as close to me, almost, as this camera is and it was pointed right at me,” Husfelt said. “I was trying to turn kind of sideways. … It’s just all reactionary. Who knows what you do in a situation like that? We were all scared and doing a lot of praying, I can tell you that.” CNN

The story of the gunman at the School Board meeting struck me as ironic.  Here we have an institution (School Boards) which typically route out any semblance of religion or religious expression, including the Pledge of Allegiance, …praying.  Of course the article doesn’t say who they were praying to, but I think it is safe to assume it is a higher power.  I wonder if the School Board members were concerned that they might offend someone while they were praying?  It is understood that we do not know anything about these men, they all could be Church going men, but the irony in life is sometimes so striking it cannot be overlooked without comment.

Many dispute the fact that there are no atheists in foxholes Or at the wrong end of a gun… regardless it is doubtful there are any atheists afterwards…

On a more self-defense oriented note, the female board member that reentered the room and tried to disarm the gunman was brave and very lucky.  Luckily the crazy gunman seemed to have a problem with shooting women and let her go.  Her actions may have stalled is shooting spree enough to allow the security guard/retired police officer to get there in time to help. It did not seem that she had any formal self-defense training or martial arts skills, just a purse!  Her situation truly illustrates why everyone should have some exposure to formal training in a defensive art, you never know when or where you may find yourself in need of defending yourself.

Stay safe.

Jackie Chan Speaks Out

Jackie Chan speaks out as part of an International campaign to raise awareness of the dangers and impact of fake products. Jackie Chan’s personal stake in this cause is the illegal reproduction and sale of his movies on DVD. That being said I doubt this is his primary motivation, Jackie Chan seems to truly be interested in stopping the title wave of this negative market force. Based around supporting criminal elements (organized crime, terrorists, petty thieves) the production of fake products creates active sources of exploitation for child labor and slavery. Unlike the typical business model that provides some economic gain (though minimal) in the production of real products within the bounds of the local labor laws (if present). Given the recognition of Jackie Chan globally adding his name to this fight could in time help raise awareness of the subsidiary problems of child labor exploitation and slavery rampant in the world today. But keeping thing light Jackie Chan “used a flurry of karate chops against four assailants wearing Jackie Chan masks. He also cut a tie in half with scissors and ripped apart a pair of counterfeit shoes with his bare hands.” I pity the counterfeiter that Jackie runs into!
