Do I call you Master?
Karate . Quotes
Mas Oyama’s answer to this question:
“I should say that this is important, but you immediately refer to your teacher as a “master.” However, it is necessary to clearly distinguish between “master”, “teacher” and “senior”. I want you to remember well, but the first and second dan are “seniors”. The third and fourth dans are “teachers”. Five or more dans are called “masters”.
As a Christian we are leery of calling anyone Master. I think some Christians believe by using such an address you are worshiping the person. In the Martial Arts it is a term of respect and recognition. Recognizing the rank and skill of the person without actually worshiping them. I am often amused at these objections since these same people without using words worship celebrities or accomplishments or something else. Here Mas Oyama is talking about a term of Respect and accomplishment.
