Many Schools use breaking as a psychological tool, faking the object break to increase a students confidence.  I despise this practice.  False confidence in the Martial Arts is more dangerous then a lack of confidence.  That said, Tameshiwari, the art of breaking wood, tile, brick, and stone with the fist or the bare foot serves as a measure of the acquired strength and technique.
