The report says ‘THE SKY’S the limit’ for a talented karate-loving youngster who has become the youngest black belt in the Yorkshire Karate Association. Nine-year-old Samuel Phillips who started martial arts training three years ago recently attained his black belt first dan at Bircotes Shotokan Karate Club. While not as young 12-year-old Gemma Thomas also got her black belt first dan at the same time. Their instructor, fourth dan, Angela Chapman said “They have both done really well and I am ever so proud of them. I have known Samuel since he started three years ago. He has always listened to what is said and followed instructions and the sky’s the limit for him.” She added “In two years’ time he can start working towards his second dan and is already starting to teach a little bit. We want him to become a full instructor later on.” Angela, 41, who has been doing karate for 25 years, is also looking to the future with Gemma as well. “She isn’t the first girl to get her black belt first dan but she has done ever so well,” Angela added.
“If she continues to make the progress she is doing, then she can really go far.” The club meets every Monday and Wednesday night from 6pm to 7pm at the Harworth and Bircotes Leisure Centre on Whitehouse Road. For more information Ring Angela on 01302 752176.
