Channel your energy
NewsTo often we are misguided. To often we are apathetic. To often we waste our energy on the wrong target because it is easy. It was recently reported the Flight attendants feel wrath of fliers. I’m not sure why this was news but it got me to thinking. Flight attendants, store clerks, front line employees in most cases catch the wrath of us the consumers. This is rarely warranted because these employees are almost as powerless as we are. We forget that like us these people are just trying to make a living and do their job. There are always those who want to make a living and NOT do their job, those deserve our wrath! But in general we focus our energy on the little guy when we have a problem. That is why the people we should be focusing our energy on pay them to do this job. They are a decoy for you to channel your energy onto. This of course is a pointless as punching a random, non-threatening guy walking by when someone else is giving you a hard time. From my experience acting like this makes you a bully. A bully is someone who picks on or attacks someone in a vulnerable position, like the random, non-threatening guy. So when we get aggressive with front line staff we are acting like bullies, like it or not. Most front line employees are reasonable people and know if you are getting the shaft or not. Instead of showing them empathy we should be showing them apathy, we should first let them know we are not personally attacking them. Then we should ask how we can solve the problem at hand. Try to work with them not at them! I can’t tell you how many times I have had front line employees thank me for extending these common courtesies. Of course I often have to speak with management but if the employee is helpful I always admonish management and praise the front line employee. However, if the front line employee is one that acts like it is their company to defend and is part of the problem then I make them part of the problem!
So as we travel this Holiday week or anytime this summer and beyond, remember that the person in front of you is usually just trying to do their job. If you want to vent your energy on someone ask for the manager, pull back the curtain and go after the wizard, go all the way to the CEO if you have to! But be nice and stay in control, you are a Martial Artist after all!
