A Fighter’s Challenge
Training notesLately I have been playing a lot of Chess and it has gotten me to thinking. Actually to analyzing other aspects of my life. My Martial Arts skills in particular. For those of you who do not play Chess it is a game that has strict rules, is very unforgiving, requires you to maintain complete awareness and calculate the impact of your ever move. Sounds like sparring to me! In many ways I am finding that my Chess games are improving my Martial Arts skills specifically sparring skills. The biggest pitfall most Chess players fall for is lacking perspective. They envision a perfect move but forget the other player may not act according to their “plan”. The result is usually disastrous and the game ends in defeat.
We can turn this to our advantage if we learn from our mistakes. The same is true when we spar. The first rule is to never under estimate your opponent or to over estimate your ability. More often then not I have won a match simply by letting my opponent think they had the upper hand. Like Chess sparring requires us to plan our moves without signaling, observe and adapt to our opponents actions and above all protect our assets!! There is no magic potion to make you a great Chess player or fighter, it takes practice and training. Unlike Chess, sparring requires physical stamina so start there. The better shape you are in the faster your fighting skills will improve. If you can’t physically last in the sparring ring then there is no sense in working on your sparring skills! So for now train hard and harden your body. And in the mean time play some Chess, you might be surprised how much it improves your skills. After all it takes more the brawn to win a fight.
