Identity Theft . Law Enforcement . NewsOctober 19, Albuquerque Tribune (NM) – Summit attendees discuss identity theft. Several law enforcement representatives in New Mexico, as well as national officials, attended a statewide summit to discuss identity theft Monday, October 17. The summit was put on by the New Mexico Securities Division Regulation and Licensing Department to discuss solutions to the growing problem. As it is, New Mexico is ranked twelfth in the number of identity-theft victims in the United States with 83.4 per 100,000 population in 2004, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Police Officer Matt Flotte said that identity theft is still not seen as a serious crime in the eyes of many law enforcement officers. “Most officers are still under the opinion that it’s a secondary crime and don’t realize the huge impact it has on its victims,” he said.
