The Formerly Great Jackie Chan
History . NewsJackie Chan is one of my favorite Martial Artists. That is why it makes me sad to see such a great man submit to easily to a Totalitarian Regime, the CCP.
In 2018, Chan sponsored a Bill urging Beijing to introduce laws to protect China’s “national dignity” from insults! Jackie Chan has not commented publicly on the bill, but the Hong Kong-born action star has previously spoken in favour of China’s authoritarian rule.
In 2008 & 2009, Jackie Chan sparked anger after making an endorsement of China’s strict censorship policy and media controls. At the Boao Forum for Asia in 2009, Jackie Chan said, “I’m not sure if it’s good to have freedom or not. I’m really confused now. If you’re too free, you’re like the way Hong Kong is now. It’s very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic, I’m gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we’re not being controlled, we’ll just do what we want”.
In response, Hong Kong legislator Leung Kwok-hung said Jackie Chan had “insulted the Chinese people”, adding: “Chinese people aren’t pets.”
And finally in 2021 Jackie Chan said ‘I can see the greatness of the CPC’ expressing his interest in joining the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).
The Martial Arts were birthed from the oppression of Totalitarian Regimes just like the CCP. They were developed to protect the weak from the strong and powerful. Jackie Chan’s movies use to represent this theme, perhaps his new films will promote the oppression of those that question the strong and powerful? Perhaps he has become soft and comfortable in his advanced age and just wants the CCP to leave him and his fortune alone.
A Sad day in Martial Arts history.
