Meditation Point #137
A Zen ThingWhy are we so easily offended?
Where are all the Real Men? Those with thick skin and a sharp brain? Those who live by the motto “Sticks and Stones will break your bones but Names will Never hurt me”? Where are they?
Alas, we have left the age of name calling and entered the age of submission. It is to wide and deep a topic to cover in one post or even a hundred posts. Perhaps if we recognize that the Old ways were founded in Rational thought and the New ways are founded in Emotional thought we can start to fix the problem.
We use to live in a world of Right and Wrong, but in that world we had a shared belief system. Today there are almost as many belief systems as there are people, otherwise someone would be offended! Gone are discussions based in reason. Today they are replaced by feelings and preferences without any regard to reality.
As Martial Artists we are supposed to be in control of our Self which means our emotions and reactions to others. How many still practice that? How many students are taught that Words are not weapons unless they are libelous, fraudulent or false-testimony! All other words only have the power our emotions give to them. Who cares if someone calls you a name, unless you really care what they think of you?!
Go ahead be offended, who cares? If what is said is true and you are offended perhaps you need to reflect on that? If what is said is not-true why react at all? After all isn’t getting you upset the whole point? Understand yourself and you will see what I mean.
Breath, listen and respond with dignity and compassion, most likely that person is lashing out for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Remember Real-Men keep their emotions in check. [Sorry Ladies this article isn’t meant to exclude you, the same rules apply to you.]
