Meditation Point #138A Zen Thing
“A strong wind may destroy a sturdy tree; but the willow bends and the wind passes through.”
– Gichin Funakoshi
There are numerous quotes that focus on this idea: Rigidity will eventually break if enough force is applied. Whereas flexibility allowing movement with an applied force can typically withstand much more. While this is true it ignores one key point, foundation! If the Willow tree has shallow roots it won’t break but it will fall! Similarly in the Martial Arts our stance is the foundation of all our moves. If our stance is incorrect our balance and power are negatively impacted. Most students don’t focus on their stance enough. When you train, make sure your stance in well founded. If you are not sure test your stance against some force. One example test, when you hit a heavy bag are you moved backwards?
