Physics & Getting into Shape
Diet . Fitness . Training notesWe all want to get into shape. No one’s says I want to become a Sloth! Yet look around the next time you are at the Mall and I think you will agree, the Sloths are winning! Why is that? Why have we become so lazy? How did this happen? Simple; It’s Physics! See the image below for a hint…
Things in motion tend to stay in motion. This physic law typically relates to inanimate objects not people. However, there is some truth in the thought that we tend to stay in the state we are most comfortable in. Stagnant or Active.
A few years ago I was nursing a bad shoulder. Training was nearly impossible due to the pain. Surgery fixed the problem however the recovery took longer than expected. Being an active person at first I was itching to get moving but I had to rest. As the days went by with me sitting reading or watching the tube, eating or sleeping I fell into a routine. When I could finally get moving and start Physical Therapy (PT) the forced activity was tough!
It is not that I was lazy but slowing down cost me my momentum. My will to regain my arm and get back to an active life was my motivation. Without real motivation though I can understand how hard this road to activity would have been. I had my own drive and a support system to push me when I slacked. Seeing the above graphic got me to thinking about what keeps us from getting into and staying in shape. Understanding is power. Understanding why you are having a hard time moving forward may help you. There are always excuses, I call them cop outs if we are being honest, the real hard part is another Physics term…work. Only you can do the work, so stay positive, keep motivated, have realistic goals (baby steps) and change your state from sloth to in-shape!
