Inside Roundhouse – The Billy Jack KickKarate . Technique . Training notes . Video
Due to a recent video clip posted on reddit I thought I’d create this post to discuss this particular kick, the inside roundhouse kick:
This young woman did a great job demonstrating this kick, especially the slow down.
This is a Kyokushin Karate Kick called “Jodan Uchi Haisoku Geri” or move descriptively as a “High Inside Roundhouse Kick with the Instep of Foot”. This kick requires considerable flexibility especially in the hip joint. Many people online who haven’t practiced this kick seem to think this isn’t a very effective kick, they are wrong. For the very flexible this is a kick that can be done standing toe-to-toe with an opponent which can catch them by surprise. It is also a kick that can be used in combat. Here is a diagram of the kick movement (in case you didn’t like the video above).
For me this kick was made famous in the 1971 Movie Billy Jack, right after he says I’m going to kick you on the left side of your face with my right foot and there isn’t anything you can do to stop me! See for yourself…
Here is another video of this kick showing both the technique as well as the application.
There you have it from a few different angles and video demonstrations. This is a difficult kick to master that requires flexibility, speed and conditioning but one that can turn the tide in any confrontation with an element of surprise.
