The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks.
Tennessee Williams

I think this is my second favorite meditation point. While we train in the Martial Arts to harden our bodies and strengthen our minds we often miss the most important part of our Martial Arts training…Peace. This is a big word that I know many Martial Arts students don’t hear or see in action very often, that is sad. We practice the Martial Arts for peace, so we don’t have to fight. Peace so we have a calm heart and mind when faced with adversity. Peace that we may stand for justice in our won lives and the lives of others. Peace like the violets, calm and continual, eventually persevering over the rocks of our adversity. Peace and Life comes to the patient who stay the difficult path of the righteous life. Only a true Martial Artist can see this fact all other see a futile effort of a fragile violet against an impenetrable rock…how blind they are!

Paradise is where I am.
Voltaire
It is not that I am so great or perfect but that this moment I have been given is so precious.

All the effort you are making will ultimately pay off.

I got this little message in a fortune cookie while dining with my now deceased friend, Jack Gineo. For some reason I kept it and found it tonight while cleaning up, yes an exciting Friday night around here! What amuses me is the timing of finding the fortune. First I have been swamped lately and have not been able to post to the blog as regularly as I like. That should read daily because that is what I like! Mostly I’ve been busy and have been doing a lot of background work on the site, but also I’ve been having a hard time seeing the light at the end of the tunnel too. This site has taken a huge effort on my part in planning, expense and plain old elbow grease abd I guess I’ve been a little burnt out. And yes in a silly way finding this fortune has given me a shot in the arm. I guess I feel like my friend Jack is encouraging me the way he always did. Perhaps he is…no matter, thank you Jack.

Everything is burning. The eye is burning and visible sights are burning. The ears and the sounds they hear are burning, the nose, the tongue, the body, the mind. With what fires are they burning? With the fires of greed, of hate, of ignorance, burning with anxiety, jealousy, loss, decay and grief. Considering this suffering, a follower of the way becomes weary of the fires, weary of greed and hate that fuel the grasping at sights, sounds, smells, tastes, body or mind. Being weary, one divests oneself of this grasping and by the absense of this grasping one becomes free.
The Buddha

Life is something that has to be lived and not talked about.
Carl Gustav Jung

This seems obvious but most people have a hard time with this one. Even those of us who live life often get into a rut of talking instead of doing. In today’s technology/media age it is even easier to do nothing and feel like we are doing something. It is so easy that most of us have forgotten what it is to do instead of talk about living. Now this draws into question what I am doing right now! But I firmly believe technology used as a tool or for enrichment can be a good thing. Unfortunately to often we find ourselves caught in the information which stops us from doing the living part. So I would extend Jung’s observation to include online zoning! So stop reading and act on something! Better yet, go buy some equipment which you can use to do those things you’ve been talking about! 🙂

Know the mind and see its essence, and you may speak at will and go wherever your feet take you — — nothing is not a path.
Liao-an

I like this particular saying as it goes contrary to the typical empty mind philosophy. While I believe there is some merit to keeping your mind calm it should not be empty! This meditation point emphasizes the fact that we must understand our own mind before we can control anything around us. Without that understanding we will not have the confidence to reach our potential. Far to many people do not even understand the reasons for their own actions, how then can they understand the actions of their fellow man? Find yourself and you will see others for what and who they are, this opens many paths throughout life.

So long as a man can look into the eyes of his oppressor, he is free.
Jean-Paul Sartre

I hate to use the same source twice but this was to good and true to pass up, for it is true. Our spirit determines our freedom, for we can live in the freest land in the world and still not be free if we do not embody that freedom with our spirit. We will not go quietly into the night, we will not bend to some oppressive will, without first letting the source of that oppression know that they are killing or suppressing something far greater then they can ever aspire to be. In that moment, we are truly free and triumphant over our oppressors. So let us fight oppression in the world not with words but with our will, our spirit and when left with no other means to fight, our eyes.
